DogDreamCbd Explains – What we know – and what we don’t know – about CBD oil for dogs

Cannabidiol, known simply as CBD, is an increasingly popular treatment for dogs – but how much do we really know about it?

Derived from cannabis and hemp plants, CBD is a chemical that affects our bodies in various ways. It’s been shown to have numerous benefits for humans, and it’s believed to have similar benefits for dogs.

While there’s been a fair amount of scientific research on CBD in humans, there are fewer studies on CBD in dogs. We know that CBD is safe for dogs, but there is so much that still needs to be confirmed by science.

Here’s what science has told us about CBD for dogs, and what needs to be studied further.

What we know about CBD oil for dogs

While research on CBD and dogs is still in its infancy, there are some things we know about the compound and how it affects canines.

  • Dogs have an endocannabinoid system. This system is also found in humans and other mammals. It consists of endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes and works to keep your body healthy and functional. CBD affects your endocannabinoid system, which in turn affects various organs and processes throughout your body.
  • CBD can’t get your dog high. While CBD comes from cannabis plants, it can’t get your dog – or you – high. CBD is a non-intoxicating chemical; THC, another chemical, is what gets people high if they smoke cannabis.
  • In general, CBD oil is safe and well-tolerated in dogs. Two 2018 studies, published in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research respectively, have shown that CBD oil is relatively safe for dogs.

What we don’t know about CBD oil for dogs

Many dog owners, veterinarians, and CBD manufacturers claim that CBD has a wide range of benefits for dogs. While it’s hard to ignore the word of veterinarians and dog owners who have used CBD on dogs, there is little scientific evidence for most of these benefits.

Some of the reported benefits of CBD haven’t been studied scientifically. These alleged benefits include:

  • Treating anxiety
  • Reducing hyperactivity
  • Reducing aggression
  • Supporting heart health
  • Treating depression
  • Treating and preventing cancer
  • Soothing allergic reactions
  • Promoting overall health

Although few and far between, there are also some studies that suggest CBD have certain benefits. These benefits include treating allergic skin rashes, inflammatory conditions, seizure conditions, and pain. While these studies are promising, the topic needs to be studied further before we know for sure. More studies will help us prove or disprove these benefits.

The research on CBD for dogs is poised to grow over the next few years, especially now that dog-lovers and veterinarians alike are praising its benefits. For now, it’s important that dog owners are aware of what we know about CBD for dogs and what we still don’t know
